Sir,

I am directed by the Secretary of State to inform you that, subject to your being passed by the medical adviser of this Department as physically fit for service, he proposes to select you for appointment as Superintendent of the Botanical and Afforestation Department, Hong Kong, with salary at the rate of £620, rising by annual increments of £40 to £820.

You will be required to contribute to the Widows' and Orphans' Fund of the Colony, also to pay a quarter of the cost of your passage out.

You will be provided with free unfurnished quarters, the value of which will not count for pension, in consideration of the pecuniary responsibility attaching to your office.

2. You are to understand that your employment will be under the Colonial Government; that your emoluments will be paid solely from the funds of the Colony; and that the appointment will be subject to the Colonial Regulations in force for the time being, which are published in the annual "Colonial Office List," and can also be consulted in this office.

3. The Regulations (Nos. 81 to 96) specify the proceedings which are taken in a Colony when it is deemed necessary to suspend an officer with a view to his removal from the service; but you must also understand that you will hold the appointment subject to the pleasure of the Crown, and that the pleasure of the Crown that you should no longer hold it may be signified through the Secretary of State, in which case no special formalities are required.
